What is the average res. out there?

  • Hey,

Does ayone know the average res. that home users use?

    I've heard both 640 x 480 & 800 x 600, and I've also heard that it's best to make your web page based on an 800 x 600 res. (if not liquid).

    Many thanks,
    animgirl

  • I would suggest doing a site in 800x600 just to be on the safe side. But your site will be better if made for 1024 but the majority of the people out there won't be able to see it properly.

  • I know somebody that runs 1280 x 720, but I don't really care :D

    Thanks for the info :)

  • A lot of older computers I use produce horribly eyestraining flicker if set at 1024x768 or higher, its usually the fault of crappy old fishbowl monitors, most public computers are at this resolution. Also keep in mind that the average AOL user never ever changes his/her system settings and wouldnt know how even if you explained every step in detail for hours on end so 800x600 will be standard for awhile.

I also run at 1152x864, because that is the maximum resolution my monitor can handle without causing my head to implode.

  • I run at 1152x864... and by the stats it looks like i'm a freak of nature... Don't look at me!!! I was once like you!
    :sheep:

Very true, I frequenly find myself giving some suport/traiing to aquaintances (and less familiar people). Generally the systems have been shipped set to a low resolution, and when I show them it is possible to change this, they complain that the small writing is hard to follow, and ask me to change it back.

Avoid horizontal scrolling, if you want your visitors to stick with you

  • i run at 1600x1200 normally... but right now im stuck with a stupid 14in fishbowl while my "good" monitor gets repaired. :(

i preffer coding fluid web pages, so screen res isnt usually a prob; however, even some fluid web pages dont work at low res. if that is the case with one of my designs i will make it work with 800x600 at the very minimum.

  • Hmmmm . . .

I had assumed you were using one of those old LCD screens that could only be viewed straight on, hence your name "Zero Angle"

  • Well I think the final answer is "know your audience". I developed a gaming clan website and could make the assumption that most users had high-end machines and therefore standardized on 1024. The current standard still seems to be 800X600: According to w3schools (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp)

  • Yeah, 800 x 600 is about the usual monitor size standard, as annoying as it is. My old 13" monitors (yes, I still use those things. Two of them in fact, on 2 separate computers! :p. At least, I did until 4 days ago, when a 17" was given to me!! Whoopee! :D ) (Now I only use one 13" on one computer! :D) were always set on 800 x 600. My "new" 17" is now set at 1024 x 768. I can go higher, but not without messing up my perspective, or if I hit 1280 x 1024 (which would personally be my optimum) I have to go at 60 Hz! Yeech!

However, something to keep in mind is that although 800 x 600 is usually the standard, VERY few websites are really aimed toward them. (I know! I've visited enough!), so 800 x 600 users are at least semi-used to visiting bad-fitting websites, just so long as they don't fit TOO badly.

    Horizontal scrolling stinks!!!! (Shudders uncontrollably.....)

    There's my $.02, for what it's worth....

    Xuor

  • As far as I'm concerned there is absolutly no reason to make fixed resolution sites other than being lazy, in which case you really shouldn't be making a site using html :P

  • Personally, when I am running 800 x 600 I can't stand, I loathe those sites that are made for 1024 x 768 & higher. I can't stand scrolling horizontally.

    Thanks for the stats :)

  • I meant zero angle as in no deviation from the perpendicular.

Sheesh - some folks are so picky and literal.:bang:

  • Im 1600 x 1200 it works better with the preview fature of most programming editors:) but i still do all my sites in 800 x 600 most of the time

  • I'll have to throw in my vote for coding to 800x600, although it's certainly preferable to let it flow without regard to resolution when you can get away with it. I agree with animgirl, few things are more evil than horizontal scrolling.

Personally, I run 1400x1050 on my laptop with a 15" screen (LCD, obviously). I'm always craving more real estate on my monitor. While it can be tough on my 46-year-old eyes, I think if that's too high of a resolution, you need glasses or a new prescription. Lenses or pills, your choice. ;)

  • You're right - 1152x864 isn't very common. 1024x768 is much more common, and in my opinion ought to be the industry standard for screen settings. Still, it's good to make your websites liquid so that they can fit any realistic screen size.

    Yeah, but try viewing 1024x768 on a 15" monitor. It's worse than viewing 1600x1200 on a 19".

I like 1024x768 on my 19" at home and 1152x864 on my 21" at work, 1600x1200 is just to small for my eyes.
