What do you look for in a dog house?

  • thanks for any info.

  • A flat roof so the dog can hang out there.
Hinged or removable roof for cleaning the inside.
Legs to keep it 6-8 inches above ground.
    Well vented to reduce condensation.

I make dog houses for my huskies from one sheet of plywood. here's how. 3/4" Advantech is better than any plywood.
    1) Rip it into 2 2'x8' pieces
    2) Cut 1 half into 3 32"x24" pieces. These will be the floor and walls.
    3) Cut the other piece into 2 24"x24" and 1 24"x38" pieces. These will be the ends and roof.
    4) Cut an opening in one end 10"x13".
Use 2x4s in the corners for something to nail to. The roof will have a 6" overhang above the door. You will have to do a little notching and trimming to make everything fit perfectly.

  • Durability and the ability to keep out the rain. I got my puppy a dogloo and so far it has been ok. Not great, but ok. He is not out in it a lot though.

  • the right size for my dog, its comfortableness, space, and if i can clean it just in case my dog has an accident...

  • Good insulation, easy to clean, waterproof.

  • A slanted roof with shingles and large enough for the dog to be able to get to the back and out of the rain. It should be large enough so if it's raining hard, the dog can get far back enough that the rain doesn't come in. Make sure you keep it full of straw summer and winter so it's cushy for him. The doggie igloos tend to get very hot when the sun is beating down. Make sure you put it under a tree so the sun isn't a big factor.

However, the best thing is to keep your dog in your house with his family.

  • For me - Plastic, it's light & easy to clean. Smaller as opposed to larger -- it will keep your dog warmer in the winter. Doorway should be off-center and not too large (or you will loose heat). You need to think about if you are going to stay a long time in your current home or are moving -- you may want a permanent dog house or a portable one.

Try this website -- it's the cat's meow... or maybe the dog's bark??
