What are some tips for winterizing my home?

  • We have a fairly old home, with horsehair plaster walls and no insulation in the attic, which makes the top floor extremely cold in the winter time. While we're working on getting it insulated, what are some tips until then?

  • The biggest (and often simplest) is in making sure your furnace/boiler is up to snuff. Have a qualified technician give it a clean bill of health and be diligent about keeping your filter clean and replaced throughout the season. Another cost effective measure is keeping your thermostat at the optimal temperature- warmer in the day hours and cooler at night. By replacing that old dinosaur thermostat with a programmable one, you will also see real savings. Also, you can purchase thermal blankets designed for attic floors. That will keep some of the heat from going straight out the roof until you do have it insulated properly. And one last thing, putting those window seal kits on will also help...especially if you have old windows.

  • close your windows and doors, turn on your furnace............
