Redondo Beach

  • Anyone every stayed here, or near here? I'm staying very close to the marina, just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions. Other questions about my trip: What is the best theater/productions in the LA area? Restaurant suggestions? And, especially helpful, any information/thoughts/suggestions on the LA transit system. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dave

  • I live in Redondo and public transportation exists but is crappy. There is live theater in downtown LA and Hollywood. You've got some good restaraunts down by the marina, especially a nice Brazilian place called Samba close to the Pier. Of course the pier has lots of good eating places too, Tony's is the oldest and the best.

You can pick up the Metro rail at the Redondo station on Marine Avenue (it's about 15 minutes from the marina) and with transfers, you can take the Green Line to the Blue Line which will take you downtown to the 7th and Figueroa transfer point, at which point you can see downtown, or hop on the Red Line which can take you to Universal Studios, or the Gold Line which can take you to Pasadena. All day tickets are 3$ and though it takes a bit of riding, it can be fun. (I just spent 3 days downtown at a convention and found lots of great shopping and restaraunts like Engine Co. #28 at 5th and Fig.

Redondo has a nice mall at Hawthorne and Artesia, the Galleria and there are theaters there also. Lots of redevelopment going on, but it's a good mall. Nordstroms, Robinson May and the usual mall rat stores.

Close to Redondo is Torrance, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach. Fun places to explore. Torrance is the home of the Del Amo shopping center, which is the 5th largest mall in the US.

Hope this was some help to you!

  • What type of foods are you looking for and do you want to stay in the area? I generally mostly frequent Hermosa Beach than Redondo Beach it is more fun and there are many different choices within a few blocks.

I take the Green Line to the Blue Line to get me into Downtown now and then. The problem is that the Green Line begins/ends in North Redondo and you are in South Redondo so you would need to take a $10 taxi ride to station.

The INFO below is copied from a post I made to another thread but it may be helpful. It is a very short taxi ride from Redondo Pier to Hermosa or a nice 15-20 minute walk.

For those who are not the beach kind of people there are great shops to walk too. Lots of antiques, surf shops, one-of-a-kind stores, jewlery, fashion and vintage shops.

You can also rent bikes, boogie boards, surf boards, rollerblades and skates. Down the Strand in Redondo Beach there is also sport fishing and whale watching boats http://www.redondosportfishing.com/

For those who want to venture off it is about 20 miles to Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Near Hermosa in Redondo there is a Green Line Rail that can get you to Long Beach, Downtown LA, Hollywood and Pasadena. You can also pick up a shuttle to the Green Line from LAX.

  • Check out Chowhound.com, the LA Board for Redondo & Hermosa Beach suggestions - do a search for these towns on their main page & you'll come up with lots of info for all kinds of different restaurants.
