I need some basic help with my site which I am desperately trying to get off freewebs *grrrr i hate them but needs must, better than a .tk, lol* what I don't understand weirdly enough has nothing to do with the code or any of the more complicated bits but simply, how do you set the home page to open automatically on a t35 page? like my friends site http://derelictthreat.t35.com/ here (http://derelictthreat.t35.com/) I want the home to open automatically but I get a page that lets me open the home but it wont open automatically.
How can i fix this?
And how can I get 1st transfer to be recognised by 1st page because it is installed on my PC but the program refuses to believe it is there.mainly because i cba to update both, lol, and why do I need to? The others are all free anyway so in my view it doesn't really matter where they are hosted, does it?Do you get the image at the top? I have Firefox and I can't see it.well sending the html is admittedly not required as I realised about two minutes after that post, as i can just look at the html and copy/paste, but this done it has had no effect on the site, any ideas? Thanks for the ideas on hosts, went for netfirms in the end, just because i liked the name lol, new site is Here (http://www.blackhelms.netfirms.com/) ok now the ad problem is almost sorted does anyone have any feedback on the site, or just some ideas on how to improve it, and while your doing that, i'll sit here and gorm out in the corner.:)Sort of like: You get what you pay for.
I like freewebs for what you get for very little money. Just $10 a year for extra space removes all advertising.
With your own domain name, DNS costs about $15 a year. Removes all advertising too. Not too bad.Sorry, yeah it would be usefulah screw t35, i'll have to find another one, I use a URL redirection anyway so it wont have too much affect, any ideas (I know technically this should be in the hosting section but a new thread seems overenthusiastic)yes, you do a lot with php that you cannot with Html coding. Php is what drives all forums, CMS solutions, and all those fancy stuff that so many try to do. I would look into what exactly you want to do and then read some tutorials. There is more to it than just simple insert of information.YEEESS!! It finally works, thanks a lot tmmoose and an apology for the useless e-mail it was just that the ftp server was a bit slow to update, thanks again!Hey I Love Free Stuff!! :hellotherI didn't have the image to upload. so - no.Well tmmoose - at least you don't get a pop on every page.
TANSTAAFL
DEalso, sorry i'm a n00b, but when my site uses a style.css document that works on my PC but seems to stop when uploaded when the files are loaded seperately, is there a way to overcome this? I have tried making the .css file a direct link but it still fails to register, any suggestions?ah, problem, the server won't support php on the free mode, I get:
The website you are viewing is unable to display PHP pages.
Netfirms STARTER hosting does not support PHP. If you are the owner of the site, and would like to use PHP, we encourage you to upgrade to one of our PREMIUM hosting plans (starting at only $5/month). You can upgrade by logging into your Member Tools located at http://www.netfirms.com/members
Is there any way I can get it to work without paying for it?
Or should i just move to your first suggestion... It seemed to support php, though i don't relish the idea of doing the site again. Maybe i'll just leave my forum where it is, lol.Well, apart from the fact that I couldn't do anything with your images, I copied your html (cutting out the Bravenet stuff) and your css and put it on my freewebs site and you can see what it looks like.
In Firefox it looks OK.

I'm not sure what the problem is.SORRY.. netfirms uses ...perl cgi ..you can host your own guestbook, forum, picture gallery etc
Why not have both free sites??IT is all about control..you can have your g-book ,gallery, forum on your own site ..you control it like these ..free code...Forum (http://tmmoose2.freestarthost.com/phpBB2/)
gallery (http://tmckee.freeserverhost.com/gallery1/cpg132/)Thanks, do you know if I can incorporate php in a html document like you can with javascript? and can someone post a link of a basic php tutorial because I have never had a need to use it and I am still learning html at the moment (maybe i'll do a course when I go to college, hmmmm, it has to be better than english, lol)There are cheap hosting providers and some free accounts also let up upgrade to get rid of the crap for less money. Many plans start out around 40-60 USD a year and you can find domain names around 8-9 or so for the cheapest. It comes down to support on a lot of hosting companies. I have been very pleased with ValuHost. I also sell some hosting plans. You can search some of the hosting threads. Lots of info there.true, maybe when i work full time I will make a blackhelms.com but until then I have very little choice, lol. YGWYPF i believe is definately true.Yes you can incorporate php in an html document. The file usually has a .php suffix rather than .html in order to tell the server to p**** it before sending it to the browser. It is possible to set up a server to p**** html files as php, but this is probably a bit more advanced at the moment.
The viewer does not see your php code, unlike js.
This Google search (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=php+tutorial&btnG=Google+Search&meta=) may help with tutorials - there is a plethora of them!Signed up for the free web space tried it ..result here (http://tmmoose.t35.com/)
Named the html page index.html
there are only two files uploaded index.html and back.jpgI have two sites hosted on freewebs using their dns service costs onlt $15 a year - seriously cheap no-ads hosting.
OK no ftp, but zip everything into 1 zip file and upload, then unzip it gets around the problem of single file uploads.
My sites use stylesheets linked to the documents, with no probs.
As tmmoose says, a link to your problem will be of great help.yeah, thats the problem with free hosting as far as I can tell, I decided to do this a while ago (when i didn't even know how html code etc worked) so when picking the host I didn't really pick the best one, but one good thing being that the pops don't work, since tmmoose's is new it wont have pops yet but it will later unless you can unsubscribe.
(BTW sorry but what does TANSTAAFL stand for?)Sorry but I have another question, for the User-submitted Fluff (http://black_helms.t35.com/usersubmittedfluff/) section (backstory to the uninitiated) and I have it so it is accesible but what I really want is an area on the page that changes when you click a link so for example I would make a page for MNONE and his first piece of fluff would be displayed in the centre of the page, but then I want it so that when you click on another piece it replaces that on the page with a new set, but how can I achieve that with html code, are there any tutorials etc that cover this?A link to what you get might help .are you saving your page as index.html??.also not many of us here use first transfer it is to problematic...there are a lot of free ftp programs out there.
A link to you page might help :hellother :hellothertry this free host (http://www.100webspace.com/)
small banner,php
Or this (http://www.netfirms.com/web-hosting-free)
small banner ueses PERLdamn, that one worked, could you send me the html for that please or tell me how you got that to display because i still can't get it on the t35 site. My Email (alex.j.elliott@virgin.net)Try This Link (http://www3.sympatico.ca/terry.mckee/t/index.html)http://www3.sympatico.ca/terry.mckee/t/back.jpgWord to the wise, starting out a really good site IMO, get paid hosting, I just clicked the link and all sorts of popups came up and let me away from site without following your link. I know you have free hosting, however I think that even went beyond what is normal. The system ad about my potential errors did not even have a close button....just one large fricken image. Okay, back to normal and caffeine intake....ahh...okay, what you might be needing is PHP or maybe even javascript might do the trick. I think that normal HTML coding will not do what you want. There Aint No Such Thing As A Free Lunch? Ok I guess i'm just too young to appreciate the deepness of that, lol, I can't make any sense of it in the context but thats just me, do you mean for the t35 network?so if i make usersubmittedfluff a php the html stays the same but I can use php tags to do what I want, right?
