  • To do this, you really need to understand TCP/IP, ports, addresses and the like BUT...

You can start by going into the router's configuration settings by pointing your Web browser to 192.168.0.1 (just type it into the address bar and press Enter). You should get a login screen.

Unless the password has been changed, it should be
    username "admin"
    password "password"

Once in, look on the left for :

    Content Filtering
    Logs
    Block Sites
    Block Services
    Schedule
    E-mail

You can use Block Sites for blocking access to Web sites you don't want anyone visiting from your network.

You use block services to block services like HTTP (which you wouldn't want to do because then, you wouldn't be able to surf the Web), FTP, telnet or user defined. Here's where you need to know what you're doing.

It's really not that important though because it's not like you're going to be running anything on your computer that's going to be opening any ports of great interest. It's not like you'd be running a Web server or anything. Windows machines usually have 3 ports opened of which the most dangerous is port 445 but ISPs usually block this anyway so you're really not at risk there. Even the most seasoned computer criminal would be hard pressed to get in via an opened default port.

You're far more at risk of people getting onto your computer by sending you a program like Back Orifice or some other software/virus they can use to control your computer remotely.

Another favourite of computer criminals is the key logger. Also received through email or clicking links on Web sites that ask you to install something.

Bottom line, don't worry too much about firewalls. They're useful in the right situations but most of the time, unless you're opening up ports to the rest of the world, all they do is make the ill-informed FEEL a little more secure.

Hope this makes you feel a bit better (which I know it won't until you block some Web sites (which only stops outgoing requests anyway) or ports which you won't have opened).

    Good luck
