  • my dog has breath that smells like rotten tuna fish. she has had this bad breath for about a year now and we can't get it to go away. nobody wants her kisses because it is so bad, and when she yawns you can smell in if you're standing anywhere in the same room as her. what is the cause of it, and how can we get rid of it?

  • you could possibly buy her some dental bones that also freshens her breath. i did that for my dog and it helped.

  • Hi,

I think it is Halitosis, otherwise known as bad breath, is one of the most obvious signs of gum disease. If you can smell your pet's mouth before you can cuddle up to him/her, then there is clearly a problem! That foul odor is a result of bacterial products involved in periodontal disease and should serve as a wake-up call to any pet owner that something isn't right inside your pet's mouth.

  • Could be how her teeth are. If it is her teeth you need to be able to bring her to a vet and see how much a teeth clean will be or just call around. I have worked at least at two vet clinces they are good at teeth. Its just like when we get our teeth clean.

    Or old age.

  • i don't know what the cause is but i know how to get rid of it you just buy special toothpaste for dogs and a special toothbrush for dogs

  • Get rid of your dogâ ™s bad breath Purchase toothpaste from your vet (yum! poultry flavor!), or opt for nonfoaming tooth powder for humans (foam scares some dogs). Feel free to use any human toothbrush. â śBrush once a week, or as often as you can,â ť says Kim Nicholas, D.V.M., past president of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association. By doing so, youâ ™ll reduce plaque and tartar, helping to prevent gum disease, which can lead to loose teeth. Nicholas says not all dogs will put up with brushing. (Itâ ™s best to start when theyâ ™re puppies, but some older dogs can be trained.) He suggests you start by running your finger inside the dogâ ™s mouth every once in a while. Move to a soft cloth and then a cloth with toothpaste before graduating to a toothbrush.
    Pros Charge: $100 or more.
DIY Cost: $8.50 (about $6 for toothpaste and $2.50 for a toothbrush).

  • your dog has a mouth infection, thats why it smells like that, to get rid of it...take it to your vet an they will do what they need to do to make it better.

  • Do you brush her teeth?

When my dog was younger we used to get these bad breath bone things that were supposed to help his breath when he chewed them, but my dog was never a chewer so I don't know if they worked or not. Might be something to ask the vet about though on your next visit, it could be health related in some way.

  • Have you checked her teeth? Some dogs are prone to tooth decay which causes really rotten breath. Take a look to see if her teeth are dirty, especially near the gums. If so, you should take her to the vet to have her teeth cleaned professionally, then keep up the maintenance by brushing her teeth regularly and giving her teeth cleaning treats.

  • My Dachsund had the same problem. I took her to our old vet numerous times. She had advised trying yip-yap, dog toothpaste, a wax sealant to protect the teeth from plaque and new wipes that Paul Mitchell has for dogs teeth. None of them worked so we seeked a second opinion. Our new vet found that our dog had a baby tooth that didn't want to fall out with an adult tooth growing over it. It was in the back of her mouth by her molars and I NEVER noticed it! We got it removed, and since then-no fish breath! I would see if maybe that's what your dog has..
