Donating software

  • What charities in northern NJ accept used/outdated software? I've never thrown out anything so I have a number of boxes of Mac and PC software packages, mostly office applications..old/numerous versions of Pagemaker, Word, Excel, DataEase, plus stuff like unopened OS2 Warp, C/C++ 7.0, FirstAid98, Norton AntiVirus, etc. I also have some hardware, nothing fancy, but some of it unused.

  • Thanks for the reminder neoluxau; that does apply in some cases so I'll have to take out the old versions of things I'm still using. But there's still plenty of things for which I wouldn't mind transferring the license. Look forward to learning about charities in the area who could use this stuff.

  • Hi there! Just be careful if you are getting rid of "old" software as when you bought the software, you also bought the licence. IF you have upgraded from this software using that licence, then only you are the licenced user of all versions of that software. If you give away a licence that has been used to get an upgrade, then you are also giving away your licence to use the upgraded software and therefore by using the upgraded software, you are in fact in breach of the licence and are using it illegally. Confused? I know I was. I probably haven't explained myself very well here...so as an example: You bought MS Word 6.0, you received a licence and a serial number in the box. You use that serial number to upgrade to Word 97. You "donate" the CDs/Disks/Manuals/Box for Word 6.0 to another party along with the licence and serial number. You cannot use your copy of Word 97 legally as the serial number and therefore the licence has come from the original Word 6.0 that you no longer own. If you did not give the licence, then you can still use it, but the party you are transferring the CDs etc to cannot use it without purchasing a licence. I bet that has adequetely muddied the waters for you! Note that not all software comes with a licence restriction like this so it pays to read the licence agreement carefully before donating or transferring anything to a third party. Hope this helps, and let em knwo if you want any clarification on this! :)

  • Hi applejacks-ga, What a good idea! There are a number of resources online set up to help software and computer donors find needy recipients for their wares. I've used several of these to research your question, along with some general search terms. The below statement is from the Microsoft website and is probably typical of that for other software companies. -------------------------- Donations of Product If you are seeking permission to donate software product, software licenses, or hardware loaded with Microsoft software to another party, please see License Transfer. MICROSOFT – PERMISSIONS – DONATIONS http://www.microsoft.com/PERMISSION/copyrgt/cop-soft.htm License Transfer If you are seeking permission to donate or transfer software product, software licenses, or hardware loaded with Microsoft software to another party, you may do so without obtaining written permission provided you follow the terms and conditions of your End User License Agreement (EULA). All transfers of license, either through a sales transaction, donation, or gift must include all product documentation, product manuals, original disks and licenses. Further conditions of transfer may be included in your EULA. The individual or entity giving up their software and license(s) must understand that they are giving up all of their rights to the transferred software, including all rights to upgraded versions of the software. MICROSOFT – PERMISSIONS – TRANSFER OF SOFTWARE http://www.microsoft.com/PERMISSION/copyrgt/cop-soft.htm#XFER ----------------- So, that should give you a number of good leads to follow up. Of course, you could also just contact your local schools, recreation centers, and vocational centers. Even if they haven't advertised a need, they still may appreciate a donation. Thanks for your question – -K~ search terms: "used software" new jersey software donation new jersey computer donation new jersey donate software new jersey "donate software" legally
