Trend T4ek Router Review
Posted on Jan 05, 2009 under xn--zqqs84h3is.com | editRecently, Trend Machinery replaced the classic T3 Light Duty Router with the new and improved T4EK. Weve been luck enough to get hold of one of these brand new machines to give it a test drive, hear in our workshop.
We definitely believe the T4 is a big step forward. The T3EK had its fair share of problems, most famously was Trends lack of being able to make the 110volt version of the machine function as well as is should. The switch was always lacking.
Secondly the T4 is far more powerful. Performing more like a industrial power tool, far removed from the hobbyist feel of the T3. Thats 550Watt compared to the far more powerful 850Watt in the T4.
As far as the build of the machine is concerned, there havent been too many changes. The assembly still looks a little awkward, but as we all know is both well balanced and easy to control.
In use what we did notice is how much less noise and vibration, considering the more powerful motor, the machine makes. According to the spec guys at Trend the T3 creates less than 4.0 m/s2 hand arm vibration (HAV) while the T4 creates 3.0m/s2.
Weve been told by Trend that the T4 is also far more reliable than the T3. We can only take there word for this as obviously we didnt have the machine long enough to burn a motor out! That said we gave it a really good run for its money.
So is it worth replacing your current router with the T4EK? That is of course an it depends answer. If youve recently just bought a small router, I defiantly wouldnt be rushing to the shops straight away to buy one. However if your in the market for a new router or perhaps your first purchase, Id defiantly pick one of these up.
In some woodworking circles it was often mentioned that the T3 was marketed at the wrong crowd (budget / beginners). Yet it was so close to being a high end tool used for small intricate jobs. It seems trend have really listened to this. Theyve made all the improvements the professionals and experienced users have asked for. Yet havent alienated there core market by making it too complicated or too expensive.
In Summary the Trend T4EK is a fantastic Light duty plunge router ideal for both the hobbyist and the light trade user. If you are looking at performing heavy work on this machine I would personally go for a more powerful router such as the Makita 3612 or the Trend T5.
The T4 features a variable speed control, spindle lock and hex collar nut allows easy cutter changes. The base of the machine is removable for both carving and die grinding. The machine could also be used as pillar drill fitments. The machine also features tapped fixing holes for Trend standard guide bushes. Separate dust spout fixing holes. Adjustable twin rod side fence for guiding along a straight edge. Great machine!
